Cruise lines have been advocating for a river connection in Brisbane for some time, but the logistics and funding have not yet been resolved. The launch of a new State of the City report has reignited discussions about allowing cruise ship passengers to travel to the CBD via the river instead of industrial areas. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner believes that the river is a better selling point for Brisbane and envisions a dedicated charter service that takes passengers from cruise ships up the river and into the heart of the city. Brisbane City Council recently approved an additional river terminal at Howard Smith Wharves to enhance tourism, with support from the state government and investment from Howard Smith Wharves.

The approval for the Howard Smith Wharves project includes floating dining and additional boat mooring facilities under the Story Bridge. The chief executive of Howard Smith Wharves, Luke Fraser, sees the potential for a network of riverside attractions along the Brisbane River. He envisions a series of spots along the river where different boats can connect, whether it be from the cruise ship terminal or moving through the heart of the city. Fraser believes that the river has the potential to transform the way people move around the city, and Howard Smith Wharves is committed to playing a role in creating a new river hub.

The idea of a river connection for cruise ship passengers has received support from both the city officials and key stakeholders like Howard Smith Wharves. The proposal for a dedicated charter service that brings passengers directly into the heart of Brisbane via the river is seen as an attractive welcome experience for visitors. The development of additional river terminals and attractions along the Brisbane River is seen as a way to further boost tourism and make the city more accessible. By creating a network of spots where different boats can connect, Brisbane aims to enhance the overall experience for tourists arriving via cruise ships.

With the approval of the Howard Smith Wharves project and the commitment of the state government and key stakeholders, the vision of a river connection for cruise ship passengers is one step closer to becoming a reality. The investment in additional river terminals and attractions along the Brisbane River demonstrates a commitment to transforming the way people move around the city. By leveraging the natural beauty of the river and creating a network of connecting points, Brisbane aims to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for visitors. The potential for a new river hub at Howard Smith Wharves offers a glimpse into the future of transportation and tourism in Brisbane, showcasing the city’s commitment to innovation and accessibility.
