Natavan Hasanova of Azercosmos shares her experience of breaking stereotypes and pursuing a successful career in the male-dominated space industry. Despite her parents’ desire for her to become a piano teacher, Natavan followed her passion for economics and ultimately joined Azercosmos. She was inspired by female leaders within the organization who excelled in technical roles, showing her that success was achievable in such a challenging environment. Currently serving as the Strategy and Business Development Director at Azercosmos, Natavan leads a team that promotes gender equality and offers diverse perspectives on projects.
Azercosmos plays a crucial role in providing geographic data and video services to over 200 customers in more than 40 countries. These services are instrumental in ecological management, climate change monitoring, and informing government policies. The agency also contributes to developing Azerbaijan’s space ecosystem through various initiatives such as competitions, hackathons, acceleration programs, and events. In 2023, Azercosmos hosted the International Astronautical Congress with representatives from 132 countries in attendance, showcasing their commitment to becoming an international leader in the space sector.
Driven by her vision of becoming a prominent figure in the space industry, Natavan furthered her education at the International Space University and now mentors young women interested in space-related fields. She believes in the importance of encouraging and inspiring the next generation of female leaders, citing her own persistence and dedication as key factors in her success. Many of Natavan’s mentees have gone on to achieve success in the industry, proving that with determination and a clear vision, anything is possible.
