Getting Closer to Moving Away from Vulnerable Password Technology – World Password Day

Passwords have long been a source of frustration for users due to their complexity and vulnerability to cyber attacks. However, advancements in technology have paved the way for alternative authentication methods that aim to eliminate the need for passwords altogether. Passkeys, which use cryptographic keys, and biometric indicators are emerging as more secure and user-friendly options for logging into devices. These new methods shift the security burden from users to the technology itself, reducing the risk of weak, reused, or compromised passwords, as well as phishing attacks.

Google has been at the forefront of promoting passkeys by integrating support for them across its major platforms, including Chrome and Android. Other companies, such as Apple, Amazon, and Shopify, have also adopted passkeys as a means of enhancing user authentication and overall security. By leveraging passkeys, users can authenticate themselves more securely and efficiently, without the inconvenience of traditional passwords. Despite the advantages of passkeys, not all apps and websites have implemented support for them, so password managers remain a helpful tool for remembering and securing unique passwords for different accounts.

In order to maintain strong and secure passwords, users are advised to follow certain guidelines. Longer passwords, preferably at least 16 characters, are recommended to thwart password-cracking software. Random sequences of characters or passphrases consisting of unrelated words can also enhance security. Recycling passwords should be avoided to prevent widespread compromise in case of theft. Changing passwords immediately upon suspicion of compromise is essential, while refraining from posting personal information on social media and taking online quizzes that may collect sensitive data can help protect against password cracking.

Additionally, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) is crucial for adding an extra layer of security to accounts. 2FA requires users to provide a second form of identification, such as a code generated by an app, a biometric scan, or a physical security key, in addition to their password. This added step may deter cybercriminals from gaining unauthorized access to accounts, especially if they attempt SIM swapping to intercept text messages containing 2FA codes. Overall, by following these tips and adopting new authentication methods like passkeys, users can enhance the security of their online accounts and reduce their reliance on conventional passwords.
