Physicians Reveal the Bathroom Habit They Refuse to Do at Any Cost

Using wet wipes in the bathroom may not be the best idea, according to colorectal and gastrointestinal doctors. While wet wipes are marketed as providing a better clean, they can actually cause irritation and other issues. Dr. Alex Elias, a board-certified female colorectal surgeon, warns that wet wipes can cause perianal dermatitis due to certain ingredients and preservatives, disruption of good bacteria, and residual moisture left behind. Dr. Maysaa El Zoghbi, a gastroenterologist, adds that the materials in wet wipes may be abrasive, exacerbating irritation in individuals with sensitive skin or conditions such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures.

Moreover, wet wipes often contain alcohol or fragrances which can further irritate the perianal area. Excess moisture left behind from wet wipes can also promote the growth of bacteria or fungi, leading to irritation. Dr. Carlton Thomas, a gastroenterologist, advises avoiding wipes with ingredients like parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, and cocamidopropyl betaine. Using gentle, alcohol, and fragrance-free wipes can help reduce the risk of irritation. Wet wipes are also harmful to pipes and the environment, as they can clog sewer systems and take a long time to break down.

Instead of wet wipes, doctors recommend using toilet paper and a bidet for optimal hygiene. Bidets can help maintain perineal health and reduce the risk of dermatological and infectious complications. Brands like Tushy and RinseWorks offer easy-to-install bidets for home use, or a squeeze bottle can mimic the effect at a lower cost. Unscented toilet paper is another recommended option, but it is important to wipe gently and never scrub the perianal area. Monitoring the color and consistency of bowel movements can provide valuable information about overall health.

It is essential to seek medical advice if there is any bleeding or irritation while wiping, as these may be signs of an underlying issue. A physician can recommend the best wiping method based on individual needs to ensure optimal hygiene. Taking care of personal hygiene in the bathroom is crucial for overall health, and using the right products and techniques can help prevent irritation and other issues in the perianal region. Staying informed about proper bathroom etiquette and seeking advice when needed can contribute to better health and well-being.
