Synagogue in Warsaw targeted in late-night attack with three firebombs, no injuries cited

Unknown perpetrators attacked Warsaw’s main synagogue with firebombs, but fortunately, there was minimal damage and no injuries. The incident occurred around 1 a.m., with three Molotov cocktails thrown at the Nożyk Synagogue. Political leaders strongly condemned the attack, and ambassadors from the U.S. and Israel joined Jewish community leaders and Polish officials to show solidarity with Poland’s Jewish community. The synagogue, the only surviving prewar Jewish house of prayer in the Polish capital, sustained damage near a ground floor window.

Despite condemnation from leaders like Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski, the perpetrators of the attack remain unknown. Police have opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred on the 20th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the European Union, leading some to speculate about ulterior motives behind the attack. President Duda emphasized that there is no place for antisemitism or hatred in Poland, echoing the sentiments of the Jewish community and political leaders who gathered to show support for the affected synagogue.

This attack on the Nożyk Synagogue comes at a time when antisemitism remains a global concern, with incidents like the spray-painted Stars of David in Paris sparking fears about rising hatred towards Jewish communities. France had previously reported being the target of a Russian online campaign that sought to inflame tensions surrounding antisemitism during the Israel-Hamas war. In Poland, a country that was once home to Europe’s largest Jewish population before the Holocaust, there is now only a small number of Jewish inhabitants in the population.

The Nożyk Synagogue is revered as a symbol of survival in Poland, standing as a testament to the country’s Jewish heritage and resilience. The attack on this historic building serves as a stark reminder of the lingering threat of antisemitism and the importance of standing united against hatred and intolerance. As investigations continue to uncover the motives behind the attack, it is essential for communities to come together in solidarity to support those affected and send a clear message that acts of violence and discrimination will not be tolerated. With political leaders and representatives from various countries denouncing the attack, there is hope for justice and healing in the aftermath of this disturbing incident.
