Hunter Biden has taken a stand against Fox News, threatening to sue the network for defamation and conspiracy. His attorneys at Geragos & Geragos in Los Angeles sent a letter to Fox News citing issues with the network’s coverage of unfounded bribery allegations and a “mock trial” series about him on Fox Nation. The allegations were made by indicted FBI informant Alexander Smirnov and have since been discredited, but Fox continued to air them without remorse.
The letter demands that Fox retract and correct their coverage of the bribery claims and remove the “mock trial” series from all streaming platforms. In addition, it accuses Fox of unlawfully publishing stolen intimate images of Hunter Biden that were included in the series. The attorneys claim that the images were hacked, stolen, and/or manipulated digital material published without Biden’s consent, and they are seeking compensatory and punitive damages as well as injunctive relief.
Biden’s attorney, Mark Geragos, issued a statement accusing Fox News of relentlessly attacking Hunter Biden for the past five years to boost ratings and financial gain. Republican lawmakers have long targeted Hunter Biden, investigating whether President Joe Biden made policy decisions to benefit his son’s foreign business interests. However, the GOP’s impeachment investigation based on unfounded bribery claims made by Smirnov appears to have been derailed by his indictment.
Despite the ongoing Republican allegations against President Biden, Hunter Biden is facing federal charges in Delaware for lying about his drug use on firearms purchase paperwork and in California for tax evasion. The GOP-led House committees have collected extensive documents and records related to Hunter Biden’s business dealings but have not found concrete evidence linking the president to any illegal or unethical behavior in connection to his son’s activities.
It remains unclear if Hunter Biden will move forward with a lawsuit against Fox News. Defamation lawsuits against media outlets are typically challenging to win, as plaintiffs must prove that the outlet knowingly published false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
