Ex-Armed Forces Minister warns of trillion-dollar cost to West in new Cold War if Ukraine is defeated

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, former British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey emphasized the need for more aid packages for Ukraine to avoid defeat, as it could potentially lead to a new Cold War that would cost the West trillions of dollars. The U.S. House of Representatives approved a crucial foreign aid package on April 20, totaling $60.84 billion for Ukraine. President Joe Biden signed the bill on April 24, marking a significant step in the legislative process. The aid package is largely focused on military assistance, with the Pentagon announcing an initial defense package of $1 billion.

Following the approval of the U.S. aid package, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a 500-million-pound uplift in military support for Ukraine, the largest military aid package from the UK to date. Sunak committed to supplying Ukraine with various military equipment, including armored vehicles, boats, and small-arms ammunition. Heappey stressed that Kyiv will require additional aid packages to secure victory for not only Ukraine but also the entire European-Atlantic region. He warned that a stalemate or Ukrainian defeat could lead to a prolonged Cold War with significant financial costs.

While the latest military aid supplies from the U.S. and the UK will not immediately balance the situation on the front line, they will enable Ukrainian forces to initiate a final offensive that could result in a swift and complete victory. Heappey estimated that Ukrainian forces may not be fully prepared to defeat Russia until 2025 or even 2026. The delay in aid supply has allowed Russia to exploit Ukraine’s vulnerabilities, such as ammunition shortages and the lack of air defense systems. Russia’s capture of the city of Avdiivka in February highlighted the urgent need for enhanced military support for Ukraine.

The ongoing attacks by Russian troops on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, such as thermal power plants, have further strained Ukraine’s resources. The country’s largest private energy company, DTEK, stated that it requires at least $350 million to recover the lost capacity caused by Russian attacks. Kyiv has repeatedly called on its allies to provide more air defense systems to defend against Russian aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed determination to make up for the lost time while waiting for U.S. assistance, vowing to do everything possible to overcome the challenges faced by the country.

The situation in Ukraine remains critical, with the need for continued support from Western allies to bolster the country’s defense capabilities. The recent influx of military aid from the U.S. and the UK is a significant step towards strengthening Ukraine’s position on the battlefield. However, further aid packages and continued international assistance will be crucial in ensuring Ukraine’s security and stability in the face of Russian aggression. The global community must stand united in supporting Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity to prevent a potentially devastating conflict.
