The historical fortress located on the route of the Nemrut Mountain tour, which bears traces of three important civilizations, was closed to visitors in 2005 for security reasons. The fortress was reopened to visitors in August 2022 after the completion of a restoration project carried out in three stages. However, due to damage caused by earthquakes on February 6, 2023, the historical site has once again been closed to the public for repairs.
Specialized teams have begun restoration work to repair the damaged areas of the fortress, with a significant portion of the restoration work already completed. Walls that were collapsed in the market area of the fortress have been rebuilt, and joint consolidation work has been carried out in some areas as part of the restoration efforts. The fortress, which is nearing the end of the restoration work, is expected to welcome visitors again within the next 2 months.
Mustafa Çelik, Deputy Director of the Museum, provided information about the history of the fortress. He explained that the fortress has hosted many civilizations in the past and was an important cult area. The foundation of the fortress was laid during the Kommagene period, and later on, various civilizations such as the Mamluks, Seljuks, and Artuqids left their marks on the fortress. The final state of the fortress as it is seen today was given by the Mamluks.
Çelik also highlighted that the fortress is located on the way to Nemrut Mountain, making it a popular destination for visitors. He mentioned that the fortress sustained damage during the earthquakes that occurred last year, affecting 11 provinces including Adıyaman, and causing significant destruction to Kahta Fortress. He stated that the Ministry took quick action to initiate restoration work and that the restoration is nearing completion, with plans to reopen the fortress to visitors in the near future.
