AfD election campaign: “Today’s opening should not focus on Krah, Krah, Krah”

The AfD kicked off its European election campaign without its lead candidate Maximilian Krah, who is currently under scrutiny for possible connections to China. The party faced criticism for hiding Krah and began its campaign in Donaueschingen, a smaller city in southern Germany, where around 800 people gathered despite the absence of the lead candidate. Criticisms against the AfD have been growing, with allegations of possible ties to foreign governments, such as China and Russia. The party’s co-leaders defended their stance against any potential influence from foreign powers and emphasized that opinions and positions within the party would not be for sale.

During the campaign kick-off event, the party leaders addressed various issues including their stance on the European Union, highlighting their discontent with EU regulations regarding migration and debt limits. They also criticized the education system, lack of accountability in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, and potential war scenarios, particularly concerning the conflict in Ukraine. The AfD leaders expressed their opposition to getting involved in foreign conflicts and warned against being drawn into wars that are not Germany’s concern, while also accusing certain media outlets of promoting war-mongering narratives.

The party leaders did not directly identify who they believe is pushing Germany towards war, but instead focused on criticizing politicians who supported weapons deliveries to Ukraine, such as the FDP’s lead candidate. The event received positive reactions from the audience, with standing ovations for the party leaders and support from attendees who appreciated the party’s focus on its own agenda rather than attacking opponents. Some attendees expressed their approval of the party’s policies on migration and education, despite concerns about the controversy surrounding Maximilian Krah.

Supporters at the event shared mixed opinions on the controversy surrounding Maximilian Krah, with some indicating that it would not impact their decision to support the AfD, while others expressed doubts and emphasized the need for accountability within the party. The party leaders addressed the Krah affair during the event, reassuring attendees that any wrongdoing would be dealt with accordingly. The AfD’s approach to the European election campaign resonated with some attendees who appreciated the party’s focus on key issues, while others remained cautious about the implications of the controversy surrounding the lead candidate.

Despite the controversy surrounding Maximilian Krah and the allegations of foreign ties within the party, the AfD managed to rally support and address key issues during the campaign kick-off event. The party emphasized its stance on various topics, including the EU, education, COVID-19, and potential conflicts, while reassuring supporters that any allegations of misconduct would be addressed. The AfD’s ability to engage its base amidst criticism and controversy underscores the party’s resilience and determination to convey its message to voters ahead of the European elections.
