The Empty Bowls initiative was recently held in Pointe-Claire as a fundraiser for Corbeille de Pain, a non-profit organization focused on addressing food insecurity. Started by potters, the initiative aims to raise awareness of food insecurity issues. Over 70 local potters donated over 600 handmade bowls for the event, which attendees could purchase for $25, with homemade soup included. All funds raised go towards Corbeille de Pain’s various programs, such as community kitchens and gardens in the West Island.

Corbeille de Pain’s annual Empty Bowls event is their biggest fundraiser of the year, with the organization hoping to not only raise funds but also raise awareness about food insecurity in the West Island. According to Virginie Grenier-Deschênes, the non-profit’s executive director, the West Island has an aging population with many seniors on fixed pensions who are struggling with food insecurity. The event was attended by Pointe-Claire’s mayor Tim Thomas, who emphasized the importance of supporting organizations like Corbeille de Pain as more people are relying on food banks due to financial difficulties.

Jacques-Cartier MNA Greg Kelley also attended the fundraiser and highlighted the significance of supporting those in need of food assistance. He mentioned that one in ten Quebecers rely on food banks each year, making it crucial to raise funds for organizations like Corbeille de Pain. The event successfully raised a total of $18,500 for the non-profit, showcasing the community’s commitment to helping those facing food insecurity. The organizers hope that the funds raised will further support their programs and initiatives to address the issue in the West Island.

The Empty Bowls initiative serves as a platform for artists and community members to come together in support of a good cause. Anik Vigneault, Corbeille de Pain’s communications coordinator, explained that the initiative originated with potters and aligns well with the organization’s mandate and purpose. Through the event, attendees not only had the opportunity to purchase beautiful handmade bowls but also contribute to a meaningful cause. The success of the fundraiser reflects the community’s dedication to addressing food insecurity and supporting vulnerable populations in the West Island.

Overall, the Empty Bowls event in Pointe-Claire was a successful fundraiser for Corbeille de Pain, raising awareness and funds to support their programs and initiatives addressing food insecurity. The event brought together local artists, community members, and politicians to show support for the organization’s efforts. With the funds raised, Corbeille de Pain can continue to provide vital services such as community kitchens and gardens to those in need. The success of the event highlights the community’s commitment to addressing food insecurity and supporting vulnerable populations in the West Island.
