Longtime U.S. Rep. William D. Delahunt of Massachusetts, a Democratic stalwart, has passed away at the age of 82 after battling a long-term illness. Delahunt served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years, representing Massachusetts’s 10th congressional district. He also held positions in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as Norfolk County district attorney. The Delahunt family announced his death on Saturday, stating that he passed away peacefully at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts. While specifics of his cause of death were not disclosed, the family celebrated his remarkable life and legacy of dedication, service, and inspiration.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts praised Delahunt’s long public service as both a legislator in Washington and a prosecutor in Norfolk County. Markey recalled a meeting with Delahunt in February, where he was committed to working on behalf of the South Shore and the people of Massachusetts. Markey highlighted the significance of the William D. Delahunt Norfolk County Courthouse and how it serves as a tribute to Delahunt’s vision and service. President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela also expressed his condolences for Delahunt’s passing, noting their previous work together to obtain heating oil for low-income Massachusetts residents during his time in Congress.

Delahunt stepped down from the U.S. House in January 2011, after considering retirement but being convinced by Senator Edward M. Kennedy to stay to help pass former President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda. Delahunt was an early supporter of Obama, becoming the first member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation to endorse his presidential bid. Delahunt’s retirement announcement in 2010 mentioned that Kennedy’s passing had made him realize the importance of spending time with family, friends, and loved ones beyond his career in Washington. Delahunt’s dedication to his constituents and his willingness to work on important legislative initiatives have left a lasting impact on both the state of Massachusetts and the country as a whole.

Delahunt’s work as a legislator and prosecutor was highly regarded by colleagues and political figures. His ability to work across party lines, as evidenced by his collaboration with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to provide heating oil to low-income residents in Massachusetts, speaks to his commitment to serving the people of his district. Delahunt’s attendance at Chavez’s state funeral in 2013 further highlighted the relationships he had cultivated during his time in office. His legacy of service, dedication, and compassion will be remembered by all those who had the privilege of working with him over the years.

The passing of William D. Delahunt marks the end of an era in Massachusetts politics. A dedicated public servant, Delahunt’s impact on both his district and the state as a whole will be felt for years to come. His commitment to serving his constituents, his willingness to work across party lines, and his dedication to passing important legislative initiatives will be remembered as hallmarks of his career. Delahunt leaves behind a legacy of service, inspiration, and compassion that will continue to inspire future generations of politicians and public servants. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his contributions to the state of Massachusetts and the country will not be forgotten.
