The attack on a mosque in northern Nigeria’s Kano state resulted in the death of at least eight worshippers and injuries to 16 others. The suspect, a 38-year-old local resident, confessed to carrying out the attack due to a prolonged family disagreement. This incident has caused panic in Kano, a state known for periodic religion-related unrest that has sometimes escalated into violence. The suspect used a locally made explosive to attack the mosque, resulting in a fire outbreak that led to the death of eight injured worshippers.

Local police chief Umar Sanda stated that the suspect’s actions had nothing to do with terrorism and were motivated by personal grievances. The mosque, located in Gadan village, was the main place of worship for the community and suffered extensive damage from the attack. Reports indicated that worshippers were locked inside the mosque during the attack, making it challenging for them to escape. Footage broadcast by local media showed the extent of the damage, with charred walls and burned furniture visible in the aftermath of the explosion.

Witnesses described children running for their lives with fire all over them, highlighting the chaotic and terrifying nature of the attack. Residents of Gadan village had to work quickly to put out the fire and ensure the safety of those affected by the incident. The police immediately cordoned off the area, and the injured were rushed to a hospital in the state capital for treatment. The attacker targeted individuals whom he believed had cheated him in a dispute over inheritance, and the attack was a way for him to make his grievances known to them.

Authorities are investigating the incident further to understand the motive behind the attack and to ensure that the suspect faces appropriate legal consequences for his actions. The attack has reignited concerns about religious tensions in the region and the potential for such incidents to escalate into violence. Kano state, the largest state in northern Nigeria, has a history of religious unrest, and this attack has added to the fear and insecurity experienced by residents. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy and working to support the victims and their families as they seek justice and healing.
