5 Unusual but Effective Strategies to Prevent Colds and Reduce “Yuckiness”

Dr. Jessica Kiss, also known as Dr. Mom, shared five unconventional health hacks on TikTok to prevent sickness during the fall and winter seasons. One reason why sickness surges when temperatures drop is that cold air weakens the body’s immune response, particularly in the nose. A research study found that reducing the temperature in the nose by just 9 degrees Fahrenheit can kill almost half of the virus and bacteria-fighting cells in the nostrils. To combat this, Dr. Kiss offered her five weird ways to prevent illness that are all backed by scientific evidence.

The first tip Dr. Kiss shared was the importance of cleaning your tongue thoroughly every time you brush your teeth. She emphasized scraping the tongue to reduce bacteria, which can help decrease the chances of getting sick. Copper tongue scrapers, in particular, have antimicrobial properties that can reduce the risk of illness and improve oral health. Dr. Kiss also recommended drinking two to three cups of green tea daily as it has been shown to boost the immune system and contains various antioxidants and amino acids that support overall health and immunity.

Another tip Dr. Kiss provided was to wash your hands as soon as you get home. Research shows that thoroughly washing your hands is more effective at preventing illness than changing your clothes when you arrive home. Proper handwashing can help remove bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that can enter your body and cause sickness. Dr. Kiss also advised closing the toilet lid before flushing to reduce the spread of germs and bacteria that can become aerosolized and enter the air during flushing.

Laughing your way to better immunity was another health hack recommended by Dr. Kiss. She explained that laughter decreases stress hormones, which in turn boosts the immune system and improves the body’s response to stress. According to the Mayo Clinic, negative thoughts can lead to chemical reactions that increase stress and decrease immunity, while positive thoughts can release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially serious illnesses. Therefore, incorporating more laughter and positivity into your daily routine can have a beneficial impact on your overall health and immunity.

In summary, Dr. Jessica Kiss’s health hacks aim to prevent illness during the fall and winter seasons by focusing on various factors that can impact immunity and overall health. By following her advice, such as cleaning your tongue, drinking green tea, washing your hands, closing the toilet lid, and incorporating laughter into your routine, you can potentially reduce your risk of getting sick. These recommendations are all supported by scientific evidence and aim to provide simple and effective ways to stay healthy during times when sickness tends to be more prevalent. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can help boost your immune system and improve your overall well-being.
