44 Houthis in Yemen sentenced to death for collaborating with Saudi-led coalition

The Houthi rebels in Yemen have sentenced 44 people to death on spying charges, including a businessman who was working with aid groups. This comes as part of a crackdown on individuals accused of collaborating with the Saudi-led coalition that has been at war with the rebels since 2015. The individuals were accused of “collaborating with the enemy” and were put on trial in the Specialized Criminal Court in the capital Sanaa. The lawyer representing the defendants has accused the rebels of torturing the suspects physically and psychologically, and of conducting an unfair trial where the defense team was denied access to case documents.

The businessman sentenced to death, Adnan al-Harazi, was the CEO of Prodigy Systems, a company that developed systems to assist humanitarian groups in providing aid to those in need in war-stricken Yemen. Al-Harazi was detained by the rebels in March last year after his company was attacked. The court ruling also included the seizure of al-Harazi’s properties. The defense lawyer has highlighted the brutality of the rebels’ treatment of the suspects, including long periods of solitary confinement and torture.

This sentencing is part of a larger pattern of harsh treatment by the Houthi rebels towards individuals accused of collaborating with the Saudi-led coalition. Thousands of people have been imprisoned during Yemen’s civil war, and reports have emerged of severe torture and abuse of detainees. The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis took over the capital Sanaa and forced the government into exile, leading to intervention by the Saudi-led coalition. The war has since escalated into a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran and has resulted in over 150,000 deaths, making it one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.

In a similar case in September 2021, the Houthis executed nine people who were convicted of involvement in the killing of a senior Houthi official in an airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition. The rebels have been accused of using their control over the judiciary to hand out harsh sentences, including death penalties, to those they deem as enemies or collaborators. The international community has condemned such actions and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Yemen, which has had devastating consequences for the country’s population.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has led to widespread suffering, with millions of people facing food insecurity, displacement, and lack of access to essential services. The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been exacerbated by the war, with both the rebels and the coalition forces being criticized for their role in exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population. Efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire and a political solution to the conflict have so far been unsuccessful, leaving Yemenis caught in the crossfire of a brutal and protracted conflict.

The sentencing of individuals to death by the Houthi rebels highlights the dire situation in Yemen and the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. The international community has a responsibility to hold all parties accountable for human rights violations and to push for a peaceful settlement that prioritizes the well-being of the Yemeni people. As the war continues to drag on, the suffering of the people of Yemen only deepens, emphasizing the need for swift action to end the violence and prevent further loss of life.
