4 Compelling Reasons to Start Using Niacinamide

French pharmacies have long been known as a go-to destination for affordable and dermatologist-approved skincare products. This trend has also made its way to the UK, with brands like CeraVe and La Roche Posay flying off the shelves at high-street chemists. In 2024, one active ingredient in particular is gaining popularity among consumers – niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3. Dermatologists point to its versatility as the reason behind its rise in the beauty world.

One of the main benefits of niacinamide is its ability to help with pigmentation issues. Dermatologist Eduardo López Bran notes that he uses it as a depigmenting agent in many anti-spot creams. For those struggling with hyperpigmentation, a night serum containing niacinamide can be effective. According to dermatologist Natalia Jimenez, niacinamide has a great capacity to soothe and depigment the skin, making it a very versatile ingredient. There are even versions of niacinamide combined with retinol that are highly effective in addressing pigmentation concerns.

Niacinamide is also known for its anti-glycation properties, which can help combat sallow skin. Over time, the glycation process can result in a loss of skin elasticity and dullness. Skincare brand founder Marta Masi emphasizes that niacinamide can alleviate this skin concern and give the skin a healthier color. It also helps prevent collagen breakdown in the glycation process, thereby promoting healthier and more vibrant-looking skin.

In addition to addressing pigmentation and sallow skin, niacinamide is also praised for its hydrating properties. Masi explains that it greatly improves skin hydration and boosts the level of ceramides in the skin, making it appear juicier and feel softer. These hydrating benefits are why products containing niacinamide, such as BB creams, have become so popular and successful in the beauty market.

Another advantage of niacinamide is its ability to brighten and blur imperfections. This ingredient can help blur minor imperfections and inflammations, reduce redness, combat dark circles under the eyes, and is suitable for sensitive skin. Its soothing power makes it a versatile ingredient that can address multiple skincare concerns effectively.

When using niacinamide, it is important to consider how to incorporate it into your skincare routine. As an active ingredient, niacinamide can be effective when combined with other ingredients such as vitamin C, azelaic acid, or retinol. If you are looking to harness its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, Masi recommends using it in the morning. For those looking to address pigmentation concerns, applying a serum containing niacinamide at night may be more beneficial. The versatility and effectiveness of niacinamide make it a standout ingredient in the beauty world, attracting more and more consumers seeking its skincare benefits.
