Jandarma forces in Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Sakarya provinces are regulating highway traffic flow in accordance with the regulations and procedures specified by the authorities. In order to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers, radar speed checks are being conducted alternately throughout the day by the jandarma teams stationed in the three provinces where the highway passes through, aiming to reduce accidents caused by speeding.
The jandarma teams use radar speed checks mounted on their vehicles or portable devices on the roadside, in compliance with European standards, to regulate vehicles traveling in the 4 lanes of the highway. Using laser technology, speed checks are conducted regardless of rainy, snowy, or foggy weather conditions.
The speed limits on the highway are set at 140 kilometers per hour for cars, 110 kilometers per hour for vans, 100 kilometers per hour for buses, minibuses, and motorcycles, and 95 kilometers per hour for trucks and trailers. The jandarma traffic teams aim to minimize the risk of death and injury in accidents caused by speeding through their checks.
In the first four months of 2024 in Sakarya, 1626 vehicles were fined for exceeding the speed limit. Among the vehicles fined for exceeding the maximum speed on a 54-kilometer route, a car reaching a speed of 272 kilometers per hour was the fastest. Jandarma teams in Kocaeli also conduct radar checks on a 113-kilometer stretch between Balçık Mahallesi in Gebze and Akmeşe Mahallesi in İzmit to prevent speeding violations.
Especially during holiday periods when traffic congestion reaches high levels, the teams intensify speed checks to enhance traffic safety. In the Kocaeli section of the highway, between January 1 and April 30, 10,975 vehicles were fined for exceeding the speed limit. The most notable vehicle among those fined was a car reaching a speed of 257 kilometers per hour.
In Kocaeli and Sakarya, fines of 6,439 Turkish liras were imposed on the two vehicles caught by radar at the highest speed, exceeding the maximum speed limit by 50 percent. The speed control operations conducted by the jandarma teams on the highway were also captured from the air, showing their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring road safety for all commuters.
