17 Specific Foods People Quit Eating Because They Became Too Expensive

Despite ongoing inflation and rising grocery prices, many individuals are looking for ways to cut back on their food expenses. One Reddit user, u/randomlancing, asked people to share the foods they have stopped eating due to high prices. Some of the common items mentioned were delivery food, Doritos, name-brand cereal, fast food, eating out in general, movie theater snacks, wings, takeout coffee, artichokes, oranges, salads, Amy’s frozen meals, steaks, beef jerky, Diet Coke, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and ox tails. Many individuals expressed frustration at the rising costs of these once affordable items.

For many people, the cost of delivery food has become prohibitively expensive, with added fees and taxes making a $15 meal turn into a $40 total. Similarly, the price hikes and shrinkflation of items like Doritos, name-brand cereal, and fast food have led many to cut back on these once-favorite snacks. Eating out in general has also become a luxury for some, as the combination of high prices and declining quality and service has made it more of a special occasion rather than a regular occurrence.

The rising cost of movie theater snacks, wings, takeout coffee, and other items like artichokes, oranges, and salads has also led many individuals to seek more affordable alternatives or cut these items out of their budget entirely. Even once-common indulgences like Amy’s frozen meals, steaks, and beef jerky have become less feasible for some due to their increasing prices. The prices of items like Diet Coke, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and ox tails have also seen significant increases, making them less accessible for many consumers.

Despite these challenges, some individuals have found creative solutions to continue enjoying their favorite foods at a lower cost. For example, making takeout coffee at home has become a way to save money while still enjoying a daily treat. Others have turned to frozen berries for their smoothies instead of fresh berries, which have become too expensive.

Overall, the high cost of groceries and food items has forced many individuals to make adjustments to their eating habits and budgets. Whether it’s cutting back on luxury items like movie theater snacks and wings, finding more cost-effective alternatives like frozen berries, or simply making coffee at home instead of buying it at a cafe, people are finding ways to navigate the challenges of rising food prices. Despite these changes, the sentiment of missing once-affordable favorites like Doritos, name-brand cereal, and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream remains prevalent among consumers facing budget constraints.
