Asus has unveiled the ROG Ally X gaming handheld, a redesigned version of its original Ally model based on user feedback. While the new device retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and 7-inch full-HD touch display from its predecessor, nearly everything else has been upgraded. The storage capacity has been doubled to 1TB, with the option for further upgrades via the M.2 2280 solid-state drive. System memory has also been increased to 24GB, enhancing performance. Additionally, the battery capacity has been doubled to 80 Wh, while improvements to the cooling system have resulted in lower temperatures and increased comfort during use.

In terms of design, the Ally X features slightly deeper and more rounded handgrips, smaller rear macro buttons, a more precise D-pad, stiffer spring joysticks, and a more ergonomic control layout overall. Asus has replaced the XG Mobile port with two USB-C ports, one of which is Thunderbolt 4 compatible. These enhancements have led to a price increase, with the Ally X now priced at $800. Despite the higher cost, the device is available for pre-order at Best Buy. While the price jump may deter some potential buyers, the improvements in storage, memory, battery life, and overall performance may entice those who are seeking a high-quality gaming handheld device.

The ROG Ally X specifications include a 7-inch 1,920×1,080 touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500 nits max brightness, powered by the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and AMD Radeon GPU. The device runs Windows 11 Home and offers up to 1TB of M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD storage. It also features an audio combo jack, microSD card reader, USB-C ports, a 2-speaker system with Dolby Atmos, AI noise-canceling technology, and a built-in array microphone. The 80 Wh battery is complemented by a USB-C 65-watt power adapter, while the device’s dimensions are 11×4.4×1.5 inches and it weighs 1.5 pounds (678 grams).

The increase in system memory from 16GB to 24GB is a notable improvement, especially considering the shared memory is used for both CPU and graphics performance. This upgrade is likely to enhance the overall gaming experience and improve the device’s multitasking capabilities. The larger battery capacity addresses a common issue with gaming handhelds, offering users longer playtime without having to constantly recharge. The improved cooling system, with smaller but more efficient fans and additional venting, contributes to a more comfortable gaming experience by reducing temperatures.

While the price increase may be a deterrent for some consumers, the enhancements made to the ROG Ally X represent a significant step forward in providing a top-notch gaming handheld device. The combination of increased storage, memory, battery life, and improved cooling system makes the Ally X a compelling option for gamers looking for a high-performance portable gaming solution. With its sleek design, ergonomic improvements, and updated features, the Ally X showcases Asus’s commitment to addressing user feedback and delivering a premium gaming experience.
