Marj Hodnett, who recently celebrated her 110th birthday in Formby, attributes her long and fulfilling life to her belief in doing good. Born in London in 1914, she moved to Formby later in life to be closer to her relatives and has continued to celebrate her milestone birthdays in Merseyside. Marj has seen a lot of changes in the world since her childhood, but credits her longevity to her genetic makeup and her commitment to five good rules. Despite the evolving times, she fondly remembers her childhood when it was safe to play outside and form lasting friendships.

Marj’s early memories include air raids during WWI, and she also sang at the 1948 Olympics ceremony in London. She married her first husband Stanley in 1939, who unfortunately passed away in 1955. She then married Hugh in 1956, and they moved to Sidbury in Devon. Throughout her life, Marj worked as a teacher, imparting knowledge to thousands of young children. She dedicated herself to teaching French, geography, and handwork and needlework, starting her career at the age of 20.

Known as “Auntie Marj” to her loved ones, she does not have any children of her own, but has touched the lives of many through her teaching. Marj’s niece, Maggie Flodman, describes her as remarkable, highlighting her talents in painting, writing poetry, sketching, knitting, crocheting, and more. Marj is also a talented musician and has a remarkable memory, making her excellent company. Last year, she had set a goal to receive a birthday card from King Charles for her 109th birthday, having already received four from Queen Elizabeth II.

To celebrate her 110th birthday, Formby Manor Care Centre organized a party for Marj with a buffet, drinks, and a performance by an opera student. Marj expressed her wish for a modern atlas and a proper orchid with big flowers as gifts. Despite her age, Marj remains active and engaged in various artistic pursuits, showcasing her passion for creativity and learning. Evidently, Marj’s commitment to doing good and her positive outlook on life have contributed to her longevity and contentment.
