A woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison for randomly splashing sulfuric acid in another woman’s face inside a Brooklyn subway station. The victim, Juanita Jimenez, suffered severe scarring on her face as a result of the attack, which occurred in 2022. The attacker, Rodlin Gravesande, was convicted of first- and second-degree assault charges in connection with the incident.

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez expressed satisfaction with the sentencing, stating that the defendant was being held accountable for the frightening and random attack on an innocent woman. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Brooklyn residents while using the subway. Jimenez, who was 21 at the time of the attack, continues to heal from her injuries while Gravesande will spend the next 12 years behind bars.

The incident took place on a southbound 2 train as Jimenez was on her way to work at Kings County Hospital. Gravesande was reportedly yelling and threatening passengers on the train before following Jimenez off at the Winthrop Street station in Prospects Lefferts Gardens. After exchanging words with the victim, Gravesande struck her in the head before ultimately splashing sulfuric acid on her face. She was apprehended a month later after fleeing to Georgia.

Since the attack, Jimenez has undergone multiple reconstructive procedures, including nose and lip reconstruction and skin grafts. Despite the traumatic experience, she recently celebrated her graduation from Lehman College with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, biology, and chemistry. Reflecting on her journey, Jimenez emphasized the lesson she had learned about stepping out of her comfort zone to pursue her goals and visions, stating that she had realized she could only limit herself. She also shared her belief that anyone could be a victim of a random attack, regardless of how nice or innocent they may be.

Jimenez’s resilience and determination to continue her education and pursue her dreams serve as an inspiring example of strength in the face of adversity. The unprovoked attack she experienced underscored the importance of safety when using public transportation and the need for accountability for those who jeopardize the well-being of others. As she continues to heal and move forward with her life, Jimenez’s story highlights the resilience of survivors and their ability to overcome challenges with grace and determination. The sentencing of Gravesande to 12 years in prison sends a message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated, and justice will be served for the victims of such senseless violence.
