During my fertility journey, I learned that even though some outcomes are beyond my control, there are things, such as how I dress, that I can manage. I found that dressing for the physical and emotional changes I experience during fertility treatments was key, especially when dealing with symptoms like bloating, skin sensitivity, and fluctuating bodily temperatures. For example, during the stimulation period, my pants size can increase due to bloating, and after an egg retrieval, bloating can persist along with skin sensitivity and temperature changes. I also needed to consider what to wear for doctor’s appointments, which could range from once every two weeks to multiple times in a week, along with acupuncture sessions.

I developed some guidelines for dressing during fertility treatments, such as prioritizing comfort, choosing cool and organic fabrics, and opting for layers. For tops, a loose tee paired with a cardigan or jacket was versatile and allowed for easy access for bloodwork and medical tape. For bottoms, the focus was on avoiding tight waistbands to prevent irritation at injection sites, accommodate bloating, and make changing during appointments easier. Some favorite options included light, airy pleated pants, wide-leg pants, and higher-rise pants with more give.

Additionally, I realized the importance of dressing for my emotional and physical state during this journey. Connecting with my feelings and choosing clothes to reflect that helped me feel more in control and comfortable. It was a deep exercise in self-awareness and self-care, reminding me to be kind and gentle with myself during a challenging time. By dressing with intention and consideration for my symptoms and appointments, I could navigate the ups and downs of the fertility treatment process with more ease and confidence.

Incorporating acupuncture into my treatment routine was another aspect of my journey that influenced how I dressed. Finding a balance between dressing for the appointments and accommodating acupuncture sessions required some thought and planning. Seeking out comfortable and functional clothing that allowed for easy access and movement was essential for maximizing the benefits of acupuncture and feeling at ease during the sessions.

Ultimately, my experience with dressing during fertility treatments taught me the power of taking care of myself through my clothing choices. It highlighted the importance of self-expression, self-awareness, and self-compassion during challenging times. By being mindful of my emotional and physical needs and choosing outfits that supported those needs, I was able to navigate the unpredictability of fertility treatments with grace and resilience. The process of dressing with intention and consideration became a form of self-care and empowerment, helping me to feel more grounded and confident as I journeyed through this difficult and emotional time.
