The conservative watchdog group, the Oversight Project, filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to obtain communications between the executive office of Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Customs and Border Protection regarding the southwest border and illegal immigration. In September, the group filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the communications, but deemed that DHS’ response did not comply with federal law, leading to the lawsuit in federal court. The suit seeks to compel DHS to release its communications with Harris by October 22, in order to shed light on her role as ‘border czar’ given the importance of the issue and the significant number of illegal aliens entering the country under her watch.

The timeframe for the release of the communications aligns with public interest to understand a major party candidate’s record on a top issue in time for voters to cast their ballot. If a motion for preliminary injunction is approved, the government will be forced to accelerate the release of documents. The FOIA request was acknowledged by CBP in September, but the agency later closed the request without informing the plaintiffs, citing a lack of specific details on which particular CBP employees’ emails to search through and which email domains related to Harris’ executive office to include in the search. The Oversight Project followed up with CBP, demanding that the request be reopened.

Inconsistencies were noted in CBP’s response to the FOIA request and a similar request from the House Oversight Committee. Rep. James Comer wrote to the acting head of CBP in September, requesting documents related to Harris’ handling of the border crisis as part of the committee’s efforts to understand her role as the border czar. The public must be aware of what Harris’s team was communicating with CBP in terms of border security, especially given recent attempts by the media to portray her record on the border in a different light. It is crucial for the communications to be disclosed in order to paint an accurate picture of her involvement during the crisis.

The lawsuit seeks to shed light on the communications between Vice President Harris’ office and CBP during the height of the border crisis, as well as to educate the public on her role as the border czar. The need for transparency in government communication is emphasized, particularly in light of the media’s attempts to influence public perceptions of her border record. By providing access to these communications, the public can gain a better understanding of the decisions and actions taken by Harris and her team in overseeing border security. Efforts to obtain the documents have been met with challenges, but the Oversight Project is committed to pursuing the release of the communications through legal action.

The release of communications between Harris’ office and CBP is important in informing the public about her role as border czar and her approach to addressing the border crisis. The Oversight Project’s efforts to compel DHS to release the communications highlight the importance of government transparency and accountability in addressing critical issues such as illegal immigration. By obtaining access to these communications, the public can gain insight into the decision-making process and actions taken by Harris and her team in relation to border security. The lawsuit represents a push for openness and accountability in government communications, particularly in relation to high-profile issues such as the southwest border and illegal immigration.
