Volodymr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has issued a warning about the lack of air defenses for his forces to protect the country as Russia steps up its assault in the Kharkiv region near the border. The offensive, launched on May 10, has resulted in Russia’s biggest territorial gains in 18 months, with troops advancing up to six miles along the northeastern border. Zelensky expressed concern that this may only be the “first wave” of a wider push by Russia, emphasizing the need for stronger air defenses.
In an interview with AFP, Zelensky stated that Ukraine only has about 25 percent of the air defense capabilities needed to effectively defend the country. He highlighted the need for 120 to 130 F-16 fighter jets or other advanced aircraft to achieve air parity with Russia. Despite delays in the arrival of these aircraft, Zelensky remains determined to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who initiated the Ukraine invasion in 2022, aims to create a buffer zone around the border in the Kharkiv region, exploiting delays in U.S. military aid.
Ukraine analyst Viktor Kovalenko noted that Russia is focusing on targeting energy infrastructure with missile and drone strikes, taking advantage of Ukraine’s lack of air defense missiles and artillery shells. Zelensky acknowledged issues with staffing and morale in Ukraine’s army, which may be addressed by a new mobilization law that lowers the draft age to 25 and imposes harsher penalties for draft evasion. The toll on Russian equipment continues to mount, with Ukraine reporting significant losses in tanks, armored combat vehicles, and artillery pieces since the start of the war.
