Republican California state Assemblyman Vince Fong won in a special election to complete the remainder of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s term. This victory will add to the narrow majority held by Republicans in the House of Representatives, helping to provide some cushion to their 217-213 majority. With McCarthy’s seat now filled, there are four vacancies remaining in the lower chamber, including the one left by McCarthy, who resigned after being removed from the speakership last October.

Fong, who is 44 years old, received endorsements from both McCarthy and former President Donald Trump in his special election race. He was labeled a “true Republican” by Trump, and he expressed humility and gratitude upon his victory. Fong emphasized that the real work begins now that the campaign is over, stating that he will focus on issues such as securing the border, supporting small businesses, and addressing water storage and infrastructure investment. He also highlighted the importance of keeping the United States safe amidst security threats and emphasized the need for unity in fighting for their way of life.

In the 20th Congressional District race, Fong defeated Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux by a margin of 60.3% to 39.7%. Boudreaux had the backing of former Trump administration acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell, as well as GOP state Sen. Shannon Grove, who represents Fong’s Bakersfield district. California voters will have the opportunity to choose between Fong and Boudreaux again in November, in an election that will determine who serves a full, two-year term in Congress.

Fong’s victory in the special election adds to the overall Republican majority in the House of Representatives, which has been grappling with a narrow margin for several weeks. Following McCarthy’s resignation, Fong’s win helps to solidify the GOP’s hold on the lower chamber. The Republican Party has been working to maintain unity and strength amidst challenges and tensions in the political landscape, with Fong’s victory providing a boost to their efforts to address pressing issues facing the community.

As Fong prepares to be sworn into Congress to complete the remainder of McCarthy’s term, he is focused on addressing key issues that impact the community and the nation as a whole. He has outlined his priorities, such as securing the border, supporting small businesses, and addressing infrastructure needs. Fong’s victory in the special election reflects his commitment to serving the people and working towards solutions that benefit the community. With his win, Fong intends to bring his experience and dedication to Congress, advocating for policies that promote safety, economic growth, and unity in addressing challenges facing both California and the United States.
