A man near Allagash, Maine, had a frightening encounter with a massive bull moose that ended in a charge captured on video. Caleb Lewis, the man involved, posted the video online and recounted being lucky to escape with only a few bumps and bruises. Lewis explained that the bull moose was one of three competing for the affection of a cow moose in the area. The video shows a large moose with a significant rack of 16 points walking in the woods, fixated on Lewis, as he carefully observed it through the narrow trunks of trees.

The moose, described by Lewis as a gentle giant, approached Lewis with intense brown eyes, even tipping his head slightly at one point. The moose then made a 180-degree turn and started walking away, with its gaze still locked on Lewis. After about 40 seconds, the moose took a step towards Lewis, prompting him to nervously urge it to stay back. Despite Lewis repeatedly telling the moose to leave, the large animal remained in place, licking its mouth at one point before suddenly charging towards Lewis, who can be heard shouting before the camera cuts off.

Lewis, when speaking with Fox News Digital, revealed that this particular moose had never been encountered by him before. In the Northern Maine area where Lewis often encounters moose, he typically finds them to run in the opposite direction upon seeing a human. The incident was the closest Lewis had ever been to a live moose, and he had never been charged before that day. He speculated that the moose’s aggressive behavior was likely due to the breeding season, as the animal was focused on protecting its cow from perceived threats.

Moose encounters are relatively common in Allagash, Maine, with Lewis noting that he often spots them in the area. Typically, moose will avoid human contact, but the particular bull moose in this incident was clearly agitated and aggressive, likely due to mating instincts. Lewis usually assigns names to moose he encounters frequently, but he had not done so with this particular moose. Despite the dangerous situation, Lewis managed to escape with minor injuries, a testament to the unpredictability of wild animals and the importance of knowing how to act when facing potential threats in nature. The encounter served as a reminder of the unpredictable behavior of animals during mating season and emphasized the need for caution when exploring the wilderness.
