Dmytro Melnyk, a veteran of the Paralympics and infantry officer in Ukraine, left his platoon of soldiers on the frontlines just 10 days before the Paralympics opened in Paris. His men remain in Chasiv Yar, a city in eastern Ukraine that has been under siege by Russian forces. Melnyk expressed concern for the safety of his soldiers, unable to communicate with them due to the ongoing conflict. Despite the war in his home country, Melnyk is determined to compete in sitting volleyball at the Paralympics, hoping his team will still be intact when he returns.
He shared a harrowing account of his time on the frontlines, revealing the difficult circumstances faced by soldiers in the war against Russia. Melnyk’s translator broke down in tears as he recounted the challenges and dangers he and his men are facing.
