Ukrainian forces are facing a serious threat as they withdrew from some parts of the country’s northeast and battled Russian troops in other areas. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to postpone all his upcoming foreign trips highlights the severity of the situation. Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a $2 billion arms deal to reassure Ukraine of continuing American support, with most of the money coming from a package approved last month. Russian troops have launched a new offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, marking the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

The situation in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region remains tense, with Ukrainian forces falling back from two areas to save lives and avoid losses. Russian troops captured the Lukyantsi area, while fighting continued in the city of Vovchansk, just 5 kilometers from the Russian border. Gunfire could be heard in the city’s streets, with Russian troops taking up positions and Ukrainian forces trying to flush them out. The Ukrainian presidential office announced that additional reinforcements, including army reserve units, are being deployed in the region to address the escalating conflict.

During his visit to Ukraine, Secretary Blinken highlighted U.S. support for the country, with most of the announced $1.6 billion in aid coming from the $60 billion allotted to Ukraine in supplemental foreign assistance legislation. The aid will be used for providing weapons in the short term, investing in Ukraine’s defense-industrial base, and allowing Ukraine to purchase military supplies from other countries. Washington prioritizes providing additional air defenses to protect against the Russian onslaught and has not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine using American-supplied long-range weapons.

Russia is opening new fronts in Ukraine to stretch the Ukrainian army, which is facing shortages of ammunition and manpower along the front line. Russian artillery and sabotage raids in northern Chernihiv and Sumy regions are threatening Ukrainian territories. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have retaken the village of Robotnye in the Zaporizhzhia region after Ukrainian forces had gained control last August. Aerial attacks in Kherson wounded 17 civilians, while a missile attack in Mykolaiv injured six people. The pace of Russia’s advance in the Kharkiv region has slowed, with Moscow focusing on creating a buffer zone to prevent cross-border strikes on its Belgorod region.

President Zelenskyy canceled all his upcoming foreign visits and announced the partial stabilization of fighting in the Kharkiv region. He emphasized that Ukrainian forces are actively engaging and destroying the occupier in the region. Russian air defenses shot down several Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and near the Belbek air base. Additionally, Russian air defenses intercepted drones and missiles in the Belgorod region, with no casualties reported. Ukraine has launched drone attacks on Russian oil refineries and fuel depots, causing significant damage in retaliation for Russian aggression. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine remains a focal point of international attention and concern, with global powers providing support to the besieged country.
