Ukraine has begun to withdraw troops near several villages in the northeastern Kharkiv region in response to a major ground assault launched by Russian forces. The move comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Kyiv, where President Volodymyr Zelensky urged him to expedite the delivery of U.S. weapons to Ukraine. The visit follows U.S. Congress approving a $61-billion financial aid package for Ukraine after months of political disputes, enabling the provision of much-needed arms to the country’s military. Ukrainian officials estimate that over 30,000 Russian forces have been deployed in the region, but assure that Kharkiv, the second-largest city in the country, is not directly threatened.
