Former President Donald Trump made headlines this week after inviting two rappers on stage at his Bronx rally, despite them being charged in a sweeping gang case. Michael Williams, known as Sheff G, and Tegan Chambers, known as Sleepy Hallow, are both facing charges related to a gang case unveiled by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Trump’s appearance with these rappers comes as he faces his own legal challenges, including a hush money case in New York.

Trump is attempting to make inroads with Black Americans, despite historically low support for him within this demographic. He has claimed that his legal challenges have actually boosted his support among Black voters, drawing comparisons to anti-Black prejudice in the U.S. legal system. At a recent rally on the Jersey Shore, Trump was joined on stage by NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who praised Trump for his influence, despite being a registered sex offender.

Critics, including U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, have condemned Trump’s strategy of associating with individuals facing criminal charges in order to appeal to Black voters. Torres, who represents the Bronx in Congress, called out Trump’s offensive tactics and highlighted the racist elements of associating communities of color with criminality. Images captured at the rally show Sheff G being followed by cameras and causing excitement among spectators, highlighting the controversial nature of his appearance on stage with Trump.

During the rally, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow both spoke in support of Trump, with Sheff G referencing the importance of celebrating wins and not dwelling on failures. A spokesman for Trump’s campaign responded to questions about the rappers’ appearance, echoing Sheff G’s sentiments. However, the U.S. Secret Service, which secures Trump’s rallies, did not provide a comment on the situation. Both rappers are set to appear in court next month, with ongoing legal proceedings and intense litigation underway.

Prosecutors have alleged that Sheff G’s money fueled and rewarded multiple shootings as part of gang violence, with him allegedly treating Sleepy Hallow and others to a steak dinner to celebrate a shooting that resulted in a fatality. While the case has generated controversy, prosecutors claim to have evidence, including surveillance footage and text messages, to support their allegations. Despite the serious charges, both rappers have pleaded not guilty, and their legal teams are working towards a resolution. The case has brought attention to the influence of rappers in gang-related activities and the potential consequences of their actions.
