Former President Donald Trump announced that he would vote to uphold Florida’s six-week abortion ban, despite his initial criticism of the law. He stated that the ban was too restrictive and that there needs to be more time than six weeks for women to make a decision about abortion. Trump also criticized the Democrats for their support of abortion up to nine months into pregnancy, calling it a “ridiculous situation.” He expressed his belief that some states allow abortions even after birth, which he finds unacceptable.

The abortion ban in Florida was implemented after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, limiting abortions after six weeks of pregnancy with some exceptions. A proposed constitutional amendment in the state aims to reverse this ban. Democrats generally support reinstating the framework for abortion set by Roe v. Wade, allowing states to restrict abortion after the point of fetal viability, which is typically around 24 weeks into pregnancy. The majority of abortions in the U.S. occur in the first trimester, with very few performed after 21 weeks. Trump has previously indicated that he might support a 15-week ban instead of the six-week ban.

After his interview with NBC News, where he criticized the six-week ban, Trump faced backlash from abortion opponents. Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, expressed disappointment in Trump’s comments, stating that a lot of damage had been done. Conservative pundit Erick Erickson also criticized Trump, suggesting that this could be the moment he lost support from many. However, Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, thanked Trump for his decision to oppose the ban, stating that it aligned with his previous position on the issue.

Despite his initial criticism of the six-week abortion ban, Trump’s decision to ultimately vote in favor of upholding the ban has sparked controversy and backlash from the pro-life community. His comments about the need for more time for women to make decisions about abortion and his criticism of the Democrats for their stance on late-term abortions have highlighted the ongoing debate over abortion rights in the U.S. It remains to be seen how Trump’s decision will impact his relationship with the pro-life community and his political standing moving forward.
