Trader Joe’s has issued a recall for approximately 653,000 Mango Tangerine Scented Candles across the United States due to a safety risk involving an unexpected burn pattern. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a notice stating that the candles have a tendency for the flame to spread from the wick to the wax, resulting in a larger flame than anticipated and potentially causing a fire hazard. The candles were sold in June 2024 and feature white-colored wax, a cotton wick in a tin container, and an SKU number 56879 on the bottom.

Each year, candles are responsible for causing 5,910 home fires nationwide, according to the National Fire Protection Association. As a precautionary measure, customers who have purchased the specific Mango Tangerine Scented Candle are advised not to use it and to either throw it away or return it to any Trader Joe’s location for a full cash refund of $4. Additionally, customers have the option of completing an online form to receive a $4 Trader Joe’s gift card by mail, though they may be contacted by Customer Relations requesting a receipt or a photo of the candle.

While the official recall date issued by the CPSC is Thursday, August 15, the Trader Joe’s website indicates that the candles were initially recalled in June. However, the website does not mention the quantity of candles sold or if there were any incident reports associated with the recalled candles. On the other hand, the CPSC documented 14 reported incidents of high flames, including three cases with minor property damage and two incidents related to minor burns.

Trader Joe’s is taking swift action to remove approximately 653,000 Mango Tangerine Scented Candles from the market due to safety concerns regarding an unexpected burn pattern. The CPSC has issued a notice warning consumers that the flames may spread from the wick to the wax, resulting in a larger flame than anticipated and potentially creating a fire hazard. In response to the safety risk, customers are advised not to use the candles and can either dispose of them or return them to any Trader Joe’s location for a full cash refund of $4.

Candles are a common cause of home fires, with 5,910 such incidents reported each year in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In light of the recall, Trader Joe’s customers who have purchased the specific Mango Tangerine Scented Candle are encouraged to take advantage of the refund offer or opt for a $4 gift card through an online form submission. While the CPSC reported 14 incidents related to the high flames produced by the candles, including minor property damage and burns, Trader Joe’s is committed to prioritizing safety and addressing potential risks associated with their products to protect consumers.
