The Toyota 4Runner SUV, a popular choice among off-road enthusiasts, is finally getting a major update after almost 15 years. The all-new 2025 version will include a hybrid option, making it part of Toyota’s expanding hybrid lineup. The 4Runner has a history of being closely related to Toyota pickups, with the new generation sharing engineering and design elements with the Tacoma.

Hybrids have been gaining popularity among consumers, with sales increasing from 6% to nearly 9% of all new vehicles sold in the past year. The new hybrid system in the 4Runner combines a 48 horsepower electric motor with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, resulting in up to 326 total horsepower. Toyota’s broader strategy includes electrifying most models in their lineup, with hybrids offering greenhouse gas reductions and convenience for consumers.

While some critics believe Toyota’s focus on hybrids is hindering the transition to electric vehicles, consumers have responded positively to the hybrid options offered by the automaker. The 4Runner will join the Tacoma and a new Land Cruiser as part of Toyota’s off-road-focused hybrid lineup. Hybrids offer benefits such as increased fuel economy and additional power for off-road driving, making them a popular choice for consumers.

Aside from fuel economy benefits, hybrids like the 4Runner’s electric motor can provide added power for off-road driving. Toyota promises a smoother on-road ride with the new 4Runner model, while retaining functional features like the roll-down back window and wrap-around side windows in the back. The 2025 4Runner will be available in different versions, including an off-road-tuned Trailhunter, luxurious Limited, and Platinum versions.

The new 4Runner will offer a range of models with rear-wheel-drive or part-time or permanent four-wheel-drive options. Toyota has not yet released pricing or fuel economy information for the 2025 4Runner, but the current model starts at around $41,000. Overall, the addition of a hybrid option to the 4Runner aligns with Toyota’s commitment to offering environmentally friendly vehicles while meeting consumer demand for off-road capabilities and modern features.
