In testing cordless vacuums for their effectiveness in cleaning various types of debris, CNET used three types of soil: a mix of play sand and landscaping sand to simulate small particle size, uncooked black rice to emulate larger dirt particles, and a mixture of pet hair clippings sourced from a local pet groomer. They conducted tests on three floor types, running three runs on each type and testing suction power with sand and rice separately, totaling at least 18 tests per vacuum. They measured the results by weighing the vacuum’s dust bin before and after each run to calculate the percentage of dirt and debris pickup and the average amount of soil removed.

The Dyson V15 Detect emerged as the top overall cleaner in sand tests, while the Samsung Jet 90 outperformed it significantly on thick, plushy midpile carpet, managing to remove almost 98% of the sand. The Tineco Pure One S11 stood out as the only cordless vacuum in the top 5 of sand tests that retails for less than $500, offering high performance at a competitive price. Moving on to the black rice test, which simulates larger crumbs and debris, several vacuums achieved a perfect rating across all three surfaces, including the Tineco Pure One S11, Shark Rocket Pet Pro, and Moosoo XL-618.

Among the cordless vacuums tested, the Bissell IconPet, despite its attractive design and features like headlights, did not perform as well as some of the top performers in the tests. The Moosoo XL-618, while not excelling in the sand tests, proved to be perfectly capable in handling larger crumbs and debris. The Shark Rocket Pet Pro, another value pick, also demonstrated strong performance in removing black rice from different surfaces. Overall, the tests indicated that the performance of cordless vacuums varied depending on the type of debris and the surface being cleaned, with some models excelling in one area while falling short in another.

In conclusion, the CNET tests provided valuable insights into the performance of cordless vacuums in cleaning different types of debris on various floor surfaces. The Dyson V15 Detect and Samsung Jet 90 stood out for their exceptional performance in removing sand and pet hair, while the Tineco Pure One S11 offered a high level of performance at a relatively affordable price. The results highlighted the importance of considering the specific cleaning needs of individual households when selecting a cordless vacuum, as some models may be better suited for certain types of debris or surfaces. By conducting rigorous testing and providing detailed analyses of performance, CNET’s recommendations can help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a cordless vacuum for their homes.
