Country music legend Toby Keith was honored at the 2024 CMT Music Awards in a heartfelt tribute following his passing at the age of 62 in February. Singers Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, and Lainey Wilson performed renditions of Keith’s hit songs like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “I Love This Bar,” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!” during the ceremony held at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Keith, who passed away after battling stomach cancer, was commemorated with touching speeches made by his longtime friends and fellow singers. His three children, Krystal Keith, Shelley Covel Rowland, and Stelen Keith Covel, were in the audience during the tribute. However, Keith’s wife, Tricia Lucus, was not in attendance at the event.

Cameras captured the emotional reaction of Keith’s children as they watched the tributes to their late father. Former MLB player Roger Clemens, a close friend of Keith, delivered a heartfelt memorial during the broadcast, expressing gratitude to Keith’s family for sharing him with the world. The crowd was then encouraged to raise a red Solo cup in Keith’s honor, referencing his popular song “Beer for My Horses.”

Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas, who performed with Keith’s band, was joined by singer Riley Green to share some thoughts about the iconic artist. Nelson spoke about Keith’s larger-than-life personality and songwriting skills, while Green emphasized Keith’s ability to effortlessly bring life to his songs. Singer Lainey Wilson then took the stage to perform a moving rendition of “How Do You Like Me Now?!” as a fitting finale to the tribute.
