In the highly anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton opens up about his personal connection to the film and the character of Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder. Burton shared in an interview with Empire magazine that the decades since the original movie have allowed him to gain a new perspective on life, which he has channeled into the development of the upcoming sequel.

In the new film, Lydia Deetz returns to Winter River with her stepmother and rebellious daughter after a tragic loss in the family. When Lydia’s daughter accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice is unleashed once more, leading to a series of supernatural events that turn Lydia’s life upside down.

Burton explained that Lydia’s journey in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice mirrors his own experiences in life since the original film was released in 1988. He shared that as you get older, you may lose yourself a little bit, just as he felt he had in his own life. Burton also discussed how personal relationships and changes over the years have influenced his decision to make the sequel, as well as his experiences that led to a break from directing movies after Dumbo.

After taking a break from the movie industry, Burton found a fresh start in television with the series Wednesday, where he crossed paths with the writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The pair would go on to write a version of the Beetlejuice 2 script that is set to come to life in theaters in September. The film will also feature Jenna Ortega in a key role as Lydia’s daughter, providing an exciting connection for fans of the Wednesday series.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on September 6, offering fans the chance to reunite with beloved characters and explore new twists in the supernatural world created by Tim Burton. The film promises to delve deeper into Lydia Deetz’s story and the impact of the events of the original movie on her life, providing a fresh perspective on the beloved character and the iconic spirit Beetlejuice. Additionally, Burton and the Wednesday team are back filming Season 2 for Netflix, providing a double dose of entertainment for fans of the director’s unique and imaginative storytelling.
