Due to temperatures above seasonal norms in Turkey, lack of sufficient rainfall during the summer, unconscious irrigation, illegal usage, and other factors, many provinces experienced drought in water sources such as lakes, dams, rivers, and streams.
One of the largest natural resources in the Marmara Region, Sapanca Lake, which meets the drinking water needs of 3 million people in Kocaeli and Sakarya, was negatively affected by this situation.
The water level of Sapanca Lake, which fluctuates daily, reached its lowest levels in the past five years.
The water level, which was measured at 30.13 meters last week, has decreased by 8 centimeters to 30.05 meters as of today.
In some coastal areas of Sapanca Lake, the water receded by several meters, and in areas where piers are normally situated in the water, there was no water observed.
In the Seka Camp area of Kartepe district, remnants of square-shaped stones believed to be of historical significance were discovered approximately 100 meters offshore in the lake.
