In the village of Kalfalar, belonging to the Emet district of Kütahya, which has one of the smallest populations in Turkey, 87-year-old İbrahim Elaslan, who lives alone, cast his vote in the nearby village of Örencik.
Due to the lack of sufficient number of voters in the village where Elaslan lives alone, a ballot box was not set up. Therefore, Elaslan went to the school in Örencik village and cast his vote there.
İbrahim Elaslan said that he came to Örencik village, which is 3 kilometers away from the village where he lives, because a ballot box was not set up in Kalfalar village.
Elaslan, who wished the election to be auspicious, said, “By coming to Örencik and casting my vote, I fulfilled my citizenship duty.”
Kalfalar village was evacuated in 1970 after the earthquake in Gediz resulted in migration. Some of the villagers settled in the earthquake houses built in Örencik village, while the remaining part migrated to other places over time.
Since only İbrahim Elaslan resides in the village and there is no ballot box set up during elections, the village was registered to Örencik village in 2019.
