Kym Ali, MSN, RN, founder of Kym Ali Consulting, is speaking out about the current state of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives in America. Despite the majority of Americans supporting DE&I, some colleges, workplaces, and governing bodies are cutting their DE&I programs. This backlash has been exacerbated by the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse affirmative action at colleges and universities in June 2023, leading to a wave of corporations dismantling or reducing funding for their DE&I departments.

Critics of DE&I argue that these programs promote unfairness by giving certain groups advantages based on non-work-related attributes. Some even joke that DE&I stands for “didn’t earn it.” The misconception that DE&I only focuses on race is also prevalent, while in reality, it encompasses a wide range of diversity aspects. However, lack of education and fear contribute to barriers preventing understanding and acceptance of the benefits of DE&I.

Despite the decline of DE&I initiatives in various sectors, the clean energy industry stands out as an example where DE&I is thriving. Companies in this sector recognize the benefits of a diverse workforce, such as increased profitability, innovation, and employee retention. The industry’s progressive and innovative nature, driven by a commitment to sustainability, aligns well with the principles of DE&I.

The clean energy industry understands the importance of diversity in solving pressing global challenges and avoiding hiring based on “cultural fit,” which can lead to homogeneity in the workplace. Initiatives such as racial equity workshops, DE&I activities, and ally labs are gaining momentum in this industry, despite setbacks seen in other sectors.

Government support for DE&I in clean energy is also evident, with initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Justice40 Initiative focusing on equitable hiring practices and investments that promote racial and economic equity. The Department of Energy has even rebranded its Office of Economic Impact and Diversity to the Office of Energy Justice and Equity, highlighting its commitment to these values.

To protect DE&I in the workplace, it is crucial for company leaders to understand the benefits of diversifying staff for business success. Encouraging open-mindedness and leveraging the knowledge and expertise of a diverse team can lead to improved profitability, talent acquisition, and innovation. By promoting DE&I initiatives and advocating for inclusivity, individuals can contribute to a stronger and more equitable workplace environment.
