Factors such as performance, funding, talent, market reach, and knowledge were analyzed in an assessment of 4.5 million startups across 300 ecosystems and 55 countries. Despite the drop in ranking, Seattle is still rich in tech talent and remains an ideal breeding ground for future unicorns.

Silicon Valley, London, and New York remain at the top of the list, with Seattle’s fall being the largest among the top 40 ecosystems. The region had 10 large exits in the 30 months leading to the end of 2023, ranking 26th globally, but only had two in 2023. The ecosystem is currently on a down cycle with a slowdown in Series A deals, despite still being considered a top tier innovation hub.

Funding to startups in Seattle slowed dramatically in 2023 compared to previous years, as venture capitalists paused their investments amidst a broader tech industry slowdown.
