Jeff Sprau, CEO of Legence, is leading the charge in preparing built environments and the people who work in them for a climate-resilient future. While the focus on renewable energy is crucial, Sprau believes that energy efficiency should be at the forefront of immediate emission reduction efforts. Lowering the environmental footprint of buildings is a cost-effective way to reduce carbon pollution and pass along financial savings to businesses and consumers.

Investments in energy efficiency have increased by 45% since 2020, with a focus on buildings to reduce emissions and mitigate energy price spikes caused by geopolitical instability. Countries representing 70% of global energy demand have implemented or strengthened efficiency policies in the past year. Buildings are now 25% more efficient than two decades ago, but overall economic energy efficiency improvements slowed in 2023, demonstrating the need for more action.

Energy efficiency not only benefits the environment but can also be an economic and social game-changer. Legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are projected to create over 535,000 jobs annually for the next decade, revitalizing local economies and empowering individuals. By focusing on energy efficiency, jobs can be created that not only offer good employment opportunities but also help combat climate change.

Demand for skilled green-collar workers in the energy efficiency sector is high, with nearly one-fifth of new jobs created as a result of climate stimulus expected to be in this field. However, with U.S. unemployment at historic lows, there are concerns about these jobs going unfilled, particularly in rural and disenfranchised communities. Innovative solutions, such as public-private partnerships offering subsidized training and mentorship programs, are needed to address these challenges.

Companies are already exploring alternative solutions to overcome the shortage of skilled workers, such as strategic acquisitions that come with a pre-trained talent pool. Engaging in community empowerment and participating in career fairs are additional ways to connect with young talent. By investing in green-collar jobs, not only can we create a healthier planet and stronger communities, but also empower a generation to tackle one of the greatest challenges of our time. Let’s equip our green heroes and build a sustainable future, one efficient brick at a time.
