Residents in the Taşyaka neighborhood spotted an animal between houses and reported the situation to the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks officials. The captured pine marten was released into its natural habitat after undergoing health checks by the teams that reached the region.

Dr. Yasin İlemin, an Associate Professor at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ) Fethiye Vocational School of Environmental Conservation Technologies, stated that pine martens (Martes foina) are found in natural areas of Muğla, especially in rocky and shrubbery areas.

İlemin emphasized the warning to not feed wild animals, explaining that the animal feeds on rodent species like forest mice in the wild. He added that this species can also be seen in the outer neighborhoods near Fethiye’s natural areas, and it is important not to feed them. If chickens are being raised, it is necessary to ensure the security of the coops at night so that the animals do not approach or get used to human settlements.

It was highlighted by İlemin that species living in the forest should never be fed. He particularly emphasized caution regarding wild boars, stating that food leftovers should not be left out for them to eat in the summer months. This habit can lead the boars to become accustomed to the urban environment where humans and domestic animals reside, which can result in the spread of diseases between wildlife, humans, and domestic animals, causing harm to the entire ecosystem.

Yasin İlemin warned that if an animal in need of assistance is spotted in the wild, the situation should be reported to the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks. He stressed the importance of responsible behavior towards wildlife and the potential risks that can arise from feeding wild animals, urging people to take necessary precautions to protect both the animals and the ecosystem.
