The deadliest U.S. wildfire on Maui last year that killed at least 102 people was determined to be a “reignition” of an earlier morning fire caused by Hawaiian Electric equipment that was damaged by high winds. The fire started in the afternoon of August 8, 2023, in the same area as the earlier fire, and quickly spread through the historic town of Lahaina, destroying thousands of buildings. The firefighters believed they had extinguished the earlier fire that morning, but the strong winds caused the fire to rekindle. Maui County officials presented their findings on the cause of the fire, confirming that they had conducted a thorough investigation.
The origin and cause report was done in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Honolulu Field Office, Seattle Field Division, and its National Response Team. The report indicated that while wind was the most likely cause of the fire’s rekindling, there was also the possibility that a bulldozer operator inadvertently pushed smoldering debris to the edge of a gully, causing it to erupt in flames later. The owner of the company providing the bulldozer did not respond to requests for a follow-up interview, and the report did not identify the owner or members of his crew.
Video evidence from inside the bulldozer showed it piling loose soil and burned vegetation at the edge of the gully, which may have contributed to the fire reigniting. Bulldozers are commonly used by volunteers and contractors to help contain wildfires, but questions have been raised about their effectiveness in extreme weather conditions. In response to the findings, Hawaiian Electric stated that they deeply regretted their operations contributing to the fire and have since made changes to their protocols and operations to ensure the safety of the public, especially during extreme weather events.
