The PSOE presented its candidate for the European Parliament elections in Seville, led by the Minister of Ecological Transition and third vice president of the Government, Teresa Ribera. In the backdrop of the presentation were the Torre del Oro and the Giralda. Ribera emphasized the party’s commitment to defeating the far-right and the cowardly right that embraces it, aiming to destabilize Europe from within. The party is approaching the upcoming elections with a renewed sense of optimism and unity following Pedro Sánchez’s decision to continue as Prime Minister, as well as Salvador Illa’s success in the recent Catalan elections.

The socialist party views this campaign as a battle against the right and the far-right, aiming to convince voters that decisions made in Europe have a direct impact on their lives. They also highlighted the leadership of Pedro Sánchez in Europe, emphasizing that under his leadership, the recognition of the Palestinian state and efforts to address conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine can be achieved. The party stressed the importance of preventing a reactionary wave in European institutions and criticized the right for prioritizing the interests of a few over the broader population. Ribera also emphasized the importance of defending both the Israeli and Palestinian states, as well as upholding international order with rights and values.

The recent election results in Catalonia were used by the PSOE to showcase the effectiveness of Illa and Sánchez’s policies, which they believe benefit not only Catalonia but the entire country. The party criticized the PP for their interpretation of the Catalan elections, accusing them of preferring a victory for the independence movement. The PSOE urged for unity and mobilization to combat the rise of the far-right and defend progressive values, rights, and opportunities in Europe. The European election campaign is set to begin on the 23rd, and the party is determined to promote their vision of a more inclusive and equitable Europe.

In concluding her speech, Montero stressed the need for bold and sensible policies, as exemplified by Illa and Sánchez, which have proven effective both in Catalonia and the rest of Spain. She highlighted the importance of rejecting reactionary forces and choosing leaders who prioritize values, rights, and opportunities over divisive ideologies. The PSOE’s campaign for the European Parliament will focus on promoting a progressive vision for Europe and countering the influence of the far-right, with the goal of securing a stronger, more cohesive European Union.
