Millennials have found a new way to take time off work without their bosses knowing, called quiet vacationing. This involves working remotely and not informing their employers about taking time off. A recent Harris Poll showed that 37% of millennial workers have done this, as they struggle to balance work-life issues without appearing lazy in a competitive office environment.

The survey also revealed that nearly half of all respondents, including millennials and Gen Z employees, feel anxious about requesting time off. Despite this, 80% of US employees, especially Gen Z and millennial workers, do not use all their Personal Time Off (PTO). This situation has led to employees taking sneaky breaks from work, such as pretending to work remotely or sending messages after hours to make it seem like they are working overtime.

Employers can combat this trend by supporting and encouraging employees to take their allotted PTO days each quarter. By setting an example of taking time off themselves, bosses can show that it is acceptable for employees to prioritize their well-being and work-life balance. Rather than creating a culture of fear and anxiety surrounding time off, companies can create a positive environment that values the health and happiness of their employees.

In addition to millennial workers, Gen Z employees are also finding unique ways to push back against company policies they disagree with. One TikTok user described how she gives unauthorized discounts to customers in order to defy her corporate bosses. This generation is known for being strong-willed and willing to challenge authority, even if it means going against the norms of the workplace.

Overall, the rise of quiet vacationing and other unconventional tactics demonstrates a growing dissatisfaction among younger generations with traditional office cultures. As these workers navigate a competitive and demanding work environment, they are finding ways to prioritize their mental health and well-being, even if it means bending the rules. Employers who support and understand the needs of their employees will ultimately benefit from a more engaged and productive workforce.
