The American Museum of Natural History is showcasing an exhibition titled “Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry” featuring custom-made jewelry worn by music stars like Drake, Bad Bunny, Nicki Minaj, Slick Rick, and the Notorious BIG. The exhibition celebrates the artists, jewelers, craftsmen, and everyday people who contributed to the history of hip-hop jewelry. Some of the legendary New York City jewelers, like Tito Caicedo from Manny’s New York, created iconic pieces for stars like Biggie, Nas, and Jay-Z.

The exhibition spans five decades, starting from the 1970s and 80s with oversized gold chains, including the Adidas necklace from Run D.M.C’s Jam Master Jay. The display includes pieces from the 90s, such as a diamond-encrusted “QB” pendant for Nas and a diamond-studded Roc-A-Fella medallion for Jay-Z’s record label. Among the 21st-century pieces are ones worn by Nicki Minaj, Drake, and others. Notable pieces include Nicki Minaj’s Barbie pendant made with diamonds and Drake’s Toronto-themed neckpiece featuring the CN Tower.

Nicki Minaj’s Barbie pendant, made with 18k-karat gold and 54.47 carats of diamonds, showcases the rapper’s style and empowerment message for women to be independent and self-sufficient. Drake’s “The Crown Jewel of Toronto” necklace, featuring Toronto mascots and gems, reflects the city and his connection to his roots. Tyler, The Creator’s Bellhop Necklace created by Alex Moss contains several stones and pays homage to Tyler’s inspired Grammy look. A$AP Rocky’s “EXO Grenade Pendant” created by Moss combines a wearable grenade-clock designed with Swiss clockmaker L’epee 1839.

Alligator Jesus, Hollywood’s go-to guy for grills, created a special grill for Bad Bunny featuring 14-carat white gold, diamonds, and rhodium-plating for a Rolling Stone shoot in 2023. He has worked with many high-profile clients, including Madonna and Beyonce, and maintains molds for quick turnarounds. Moss collaborated with A$AP Rocky on the innovative “EXO Grenade Pendant,” a unique wearable grenade-clock, showcasing creativity and teamwork with the rapper. Moss also worked with Tyler, The Creator on the exquisite Bellhop Necklace with intricate details and designer appeal.

The exhibition not only focuses on the bling factor of hip-hop jewelry but also highlights the craftsmanship, creativity, and collaboration behind the pieces. From iconic chains to intricate pendants, the jewelry on display represents the evolution of hip-hop culture and its influence on the fashion industry. The show pays tribute to the artists, jewelers, and visionaries who have contributed to the rise of hip-hop jewelry’s popularity and significance in the music world. Visitors can explore the exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History until January 5, 2025, and witness the stunning pieces worn by music legends throughout the decades.
