The 2022 U.S. Transgender Survey found that 94% of respondents described themselves as more satisfied with their lives after transitioning, illustrating the positive impact of living authentically. Transgender Day of Visibility, celebrated on March 31st, aims to recognize the achievements of transgender individuals and raise awareness of the discrimination and violence they face on a daily basis. This year, NBC News asked transgender individuals to share their experiences of increased life satisfaction post-transition.

Ash Orr, a press relations manager for the National Center for Transgender Equality, underwent gender-affirming top surgery at the age of 33, which he described as life-changing. Criss Smith, a former financial services professional turned substitute teacher, experienced a profound sense of relief and empowerment after transitioning. Gavin Grimm, a prominent figure in trans rights advocacy, shared that he has found strength and joy in being able to fully express himself as a transgender individual for the past decade. Dani Stewart, a former news desk producer at CNN, expressed feeling a sense of belonging in society following her transition in 2018.

Andrea Montañez, a director of advocacy and immigration in Orlando, highlighted the positive impact of her transition on her personal happiness. Lizzy Graham, who transitioned in 2015, found that her gender dysphoria disappeared over time, leading to increased focus and productivity in her professional life. Jordan Reid, a computer science student, rediscovered her love for music after coming out as a transgender woman in 2022. Tiffany Jones, who works in an Amazon warehouse, credited her transition with improving her self-confidence and creativity.

Kylie Blackmon, a phlebotomy technician trainee in Texas, noted the mental clarity and sense of relief she experienced after coming out as transgender. Cristina Angelica Piña, a consultant from California, acknowledged the challenges of being transgender but also emphasized the joy, power, and beauty that come with embracing one’s authentic self. Despite facing discrimination and social barriers, these individuals shared stories of personal growth, resilience, and positivity following their transitions, highlighting the transformative impact of living authentically as a transgender person.
