The Cambridge Dictionary has recently added over 3,200 new words, many of which are Gen Z slang terms that have gained popularity online and in youth culture. Wendalyn Nichols, the Cambridge Dictionary’s publishing manager, believes that these new additions have “staying power” and will continue to be widely used. Some of the new terms included in the dictionary include “the ick,” “boop,” “IYKYK,” “face journey,” and “chef’s kiss.”

One of the new terms, “the ick,” refers to a sudden feeling of dislike or loss of attraction towards someone or something due to something they have done. This term became popular through the reality show “Love Island” and is commonly used in expressions such as “giving someone the ick.” Another term, “boop,” is defined as an affectionate touch or gesture, often used to show someone you like them or as a playful joke. This term gained popularity through the TV show “Schitt’s Creek.”

“IYKYK,” a commonly used abbreviation for “if you know you know,” has also been added to the dictionary. This term is often used on social media and in text messages to indicate shared knowledge or jokes that others may not understand. “Face journey” refers to a series of facial expressions displayed by someone as they react to something in real-time. “Chef’s kiss” is a movement where someone puts their fingers and thumb together, kisses them, and then pulls their hand away from their lips to signify that something is perfect or excellent.

In addition to slang terms, gaming terminology has also been included in the new additions to the dictionary. Many gaming-inspired words have begun to influence everyday conversations and offline life. For example, “speedrun,” which means to complete a computer game quickly in the gaming world, now also means to do something much faster than usual in real life. Similarly, “side quest,” which refers to a part of a computer game with its own aim and story, now also means an activity done in addition to another activity that is less important.

Overall, the new additions to the Cambridge Dictionary reflect the evolving nature of language and the influence of popular culture, online trends, and youth culture. These Gen Z slang terms and gaming terminology have become increasingly integrated into everyday conversations and are likely to continue to be used across various platforms. The inclusion of these words in the dictionary highlights their significance and demonstrates how language is constantly changing and adapting to new trends and influences.
