Suno is an AI music creation app that allows users to make music without the need for any instruments or prior experience in music. The app was released on iOS in July and is set to launch on Android soon. Users can create songs from text prompts or uploaded audio, and also listen to songs created by other users. The app generates a unique username for each user upon logging in, and allows users to create songs based on their specific prompts.

Users can request songs based on a variety of themes, such as a sad country song about a child starting middle school, an ’80s pop party anthem, or a ’90s R&B song about single moms overcoming challenges. Suno limits the use of copyrighted material and ensures that all inputs with vocals remain private and unsearchable. The free account allows for the generation of 10 songs per day, while paid plans range from $10 per month for 500 songs to $289 a year for 2,000 songs per month. Suno has partnered with Microsoft to integrate its music creation technology into the Copilot chatbot, and as of July, the app has 12 million users.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup was founded in 2022 by four alums of AI data company Kensho Technologies. Suno announced that it had raised $125 million in funding in May, with backers including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Matrix, and Founder Collective, as well as former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and former Apple director Daniel Gross. The funds raised will be used for product development and hiring. Suno’s mission is to democratize music creation and make it accessible to anyone, regardless of their musical background or experience.

Suno’s platform allows users to experiment with different genres and styles of music, with the option to refine their prompts to achieve the desired results. The app uses AI to generate music based on user requests, providing a unique and personalized experience for each user. Suno aims to fill the gap in AI-generated audio and music creation tools, offering a simple and intuitive platform for users to create their own songs. The startup’s partnership with Microsoft and its growing user base indicate a promising future for AI-driven music creation technology.
