SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, co-founders of the Godwinks brands, shared a story with Fox News Digital about the power of positivity, family, and faith. They specialize in “Godwinks” stories, which they believe are events that seem like coincidences but come from a divine origin. They shared a story about the Brookwood Community for Adults with Special Needs in Texas, which grew from tragedy and was nurtured by prayer and persistence. The community is now a model of success for adults with special needs, offering life-skills training and a sense of purpose to its residents.
The founder of the Brookwood Community, Yvonne Streit, was inspired to start the community by her severely brain-damaged daughter, Vicki. Despite conventional wisdom telling her to put her child away, Streit believed that individuals with special needs could do more than people thought. Through years of patient training, Streit taught her daughter life skills that eventually led to the creation of the community. Vicki’s simple ability to care for plants led to the growth of Brookwood’s horticultural enterprise, contributing significantly to the community’s success.
The creation of the Brookwood Community required a carefully articulated plan and the support of the community. Yvonne Streit prayed for guidance and received financial support from unexpected sources, which she saw as Godwinks giving her the “Go” sign to move forward with her vision. Today, the Brookwood Community is home to over 250 residents who engage in various activities, such as painting pottery and working in the community’s cafe. Streit’s daughter, Vivian Shudde, has taken over daily operations and overseen the community’s expansion, ensuring its philosophy and mission continue into the future.
The Brookwood Community’s vision is to change the way the world thinks about adults with disabilities, promoting a culture of joy, purpose, and inclusion. The community has been featured in a 20-minute docufilm celebrating its success and culture of positivity. Several stories about Brookwood are included in books by SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt, with more projects in the works. The community’s story serves as a testament to the power of faith, persistence, and the support of the community in creating a place where adults with special needs can thrive and fulfill their potential.
