A group of Texas A&M students from the Maritime Academy recently carried out a successful rescue mission in the Gulf of Mexico, saving the lives of three individuals who had been stranded for 15 days. The students, William Flores and Kai Ethridge, spotted the distressed vessel while traveling from Texas to Florida on the training ship. Capt. Wade Howell initiated rescue protocols and coordinated with the US Coast Guard for the successful rescue of the stranded individuals, who were later transferred to the Coast Guard for medical treatment and reunion with their families.
Capt. Wade Howell reflected on his 20-plus years at sea, stating that he had only experienced one other incident similar to this. The rare event took place on the 540-foot training ship, TS Kennedy, which was hosting its annual summer sea semester for 171 student cadets from various Texas A&M degree programs.
